good morning. it's 4:30. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news. the standoff is happening in the town of dammartin-en-goele. >> kris sanchez has the latest. >> there is a live picture from france in the area northeast of paris where this is all unfolding. it is a very ugly scene in a

picturesque town known for being the sight of the charles degal airport. t according to nbc news, the suspects were spotted by police at 9:30. they ducked into the first available business, a printing company, which appears to be bound a husband, wife and child and they have several employees. we don't know whether the hostage is the owner, the wife or one of the employees. several runways have been shut down at charles de gaulle

airport. there are are reports that the brothers have communicated with police and told them they are willing to die as martyrs. schools are shut down. everyone in the town is being told by police to remain indoors and away from windows. the french embassy are under extra security this morning. there is not concern that the suspects might make their way here but it might create an opportunity for another attack. >> everyone on high alert right now. certainly you're concerned about further loss of life. we hope that doesn't happen. thank you very much, kris. >> let's switch gears very briefly, go over to the weather front, check in with anthony slaughter, in for christina loren this morning. what's cooking? >> we have some good news, that stagnant air quality is finally headed out of here. we do have another spare the air day for today. we have onshore winds returning, that's kicking up some moisture

and clouds. the onshore winds, that's going to be key in changing our air quality that we've been looking at for the past week or so that's been very unhealthy. temperatures as a result of that ocean air being transported inland, not too bad this morning. we're talking about temperatures right near 50 degrees in many locations. as we head through the weekend, better air and even through next week. we'll talk about that and our next chance rain next week. in the meantime let's toss things over to mike. >> we'll start the report with less beer in the roadway. this is the dublin grade or the approach that we showed you yesterday morning, which is already starring to stack up now. i wanted to show you the smooth flow past hopyard. the thumbs up there is because yesterday at this time we did have an overturned beer delivery

he had long been a suspect in the case. he faces up to 26 years in prison. >> herman shumm was killed in a business california accident over the christmas break. the 40-year-old father of two was a fixture at st. mary's since 2004 and was students. a memorial fund for his family has already raised more than $80,000 on go fund me. >> and required viewing for all freshmen going forward. >> i gave up and i went numb. >> everything will start coming back to her or something. >> it's called "can't thread a moving needle."

the one-hour docudrama examines campus date rape. every word is taken from real life date rape victims. >> the perpetrator story in the film is somebody who didn't intend to be a rapist, but it was -- he had sex with a woman who was unable to give consent, and then he became a rapist. >> now, the cdc recently revealed that nearly one in five women are the victims of sexual assault. the film will soon be available to other schools nationwide for free. >> president obama will be in tennessee today to announce his plans to make community college free for students. the plan is to give two free years of community college for everyone willing to work for it.

>> the importance of him declaring it as an objective cannot be underestimated. it's a statement that getting an education is a national priority. >> the government would pay three quarters of the cost and the state would pay the remaining quarter. >> some hikers came across a sperm whale on a beach yesterday afternoon. the whale was alive but because the site is difficult to access, marine experts could not make it there before dark. they are planning now a rescue attempt for this morning. it's not clear if the whale will survive or why it beached itself. >> we hope it will survive and

they can make a difference. >> so much marine wildlife accessible to us here on the west coast. let's check in with anthony. how about some accessible warm weather for the weekend, anthony? >> i think we're headed in the opposite direction. the good news, sam and laura, improving air quality. even though it is going to cool off, it will be better to be outside. this low pressure to our south will scoot into southern california over the next coming days and that added onshore wind will mean more fog in the morning, more cloud cover in the afternoon and overall cooler temperatures because of the ocean air being transported right over the bay area. because of that temperatures not so bad this morning, 50 degrees in san jose, 44 in santa rosa. later on this afternoon, we're

only going to top out at 67. yes, it will be cool, more cloud cover. unfortunately we have to spare the air once more for today but i think this will be the last day as we head toward the weekend. you can get an idea as we head through the next few days temperatures do cool off but, again, with that cooler air, more cloud cover and better air quality. we are tracking our next storm system. that is expected to arrive late in the week as we head towards friday and saturday. overall this weekend will be dry. we'll talk more about the system headed our way next week. >> good morning. we're looking at a smooth drive across the span. as we look at our map to the north side of san francisco, i'd circle the golden gate bridge for those unfamiliar.

you can't use that after midnight tonight. we'll look at the ferry service added additional weekend service. that will be one option. driving, you can take the richmond bridge down the east shore freeway across the bay bridge. it will add at least ten miles, depending where you are, it could add many more. you will also have to worry about all the folks who typically drive through the east shore freeway, that will slow things down for all those folks, even if you don't use the golden gate bridge. the rest of the area looking very nice, including on the right side at the altamont pass and the dumbarton bridge. and the san mateo bridge, you might want to try it this weekend because it should be less traveled than the bay bridge. >> consider yourself warned. >> some residual impact.

>> announcer: you're watching "today in the bay." >> welcome back, everyone. we are close live keeping our eyes in a city just north of paris, dammartin-en-goele. >> dammartin-en-goele. >> okay. it is believed that the two gunmen in the horrific attack that killed 12 people could be hold up in a printing shop, holding possible hostages as well. kris sanchez gathering information right now. we're hearing of another shooting. we don't not know if it is related, near paris this morning. we'll keep you abreast of everything going on. it is 4:45 right now. >> officials in the search for the missing airasia flight say they've detected pings underwater that may be from the plane as black boxes. bad weather delayed the search

yesterday. officials say they've been detecting pings on and off for days. they're not sure if the pings are coming from the black boxes or a different source. 48 bodies have been recovered since the crash last month. >> if you happened to buy a -- the recall expands two previous recalls in april and november last year. there have been more than 30 reports of the candle surface igniting, one injury and one report of property damage. >> landon dowdy is live at cnbc headquarters with a look at all of the news before the bell this morning. >> good morning. >> laura, good morning to you.

futures are pointing to a open on the market following comments saying that the central bank shouldn't raise interest rates until next year. the december jobs report is expected to show another strong month of hiring and unemployment is forecast to drop to 5.7%, the lowest since june 2008. but wage growth has been stagnant and experts say wages need to pick up in order for the economy to shift into a higher gear. google is looking to get into the car insurance market. an analyst report says the company may launch a site to let people compare prices and buy policies. and more news from silicon valley. twitter is set to unveil a new video feature in the next few weeks. it will let users shoot, edit

we are also talking about the potential for some drizzle as we head towards the weekend. tomorrow morning i think we'll see the better chance of that. but overall, a little bit of green on the map this morning. this s is moving in to southern california. if you're going to be traveling toward l.a. and san diego this weekend, you will run into showers. because of the onshore wind, temperatures not too cold in the morning. later on this afternoon we'll see temperatures back into the mid 60s, to the north bay. we do have another spare the air alert in effect for today, the bay and the south bay. that's where we'll see see the worst air quality. but as we head into the weekend, we're talking about improving air quality. while it won'ting all good it, will go from unhealthy to moderate levels. our next chance of rain is shaping up. friday into saturday next week you'll notice on the map, all the orange, that denotes dry
